Hedge Pruning Sydney

Pruning is what keeps a hedge dense, healthy and beautifully shaped for years — not merely tidy for a fortnight. Our qualified horticulturists prune with real botanical judgement. Greenz Gardenscaping has cared for Sydney gardens since 2014, and every cut suits the species, the season and how that plant regrows.

Pruning and trimming aren’t the same job — and your hedge knows it

A trim shears the outer surface to hold a shape. Pruning reaches further in: we cut to a node, thin congested growth, open the interior to light and remove dead or diseased wood. If your hedge simply needs a crisp, even face, our professional hedge trimming covers it. If it is thinning, browning or going bare at the base, it needs pruning.

The hedges we prune around Sydney, and how each prefers to be cut

No two species respond alike, and treating them identically is how good hedges are ruined.

  • Lilly Pilly (Syzygium) — vigorous and forgiving; prune after each flush, watching for psyllid distortion on new tips.
  • Murraya — prune after flowering to protect the scent, keeping the form soft rather than severely boxed.
  • Buxus (English box) — slow to recover, so we cut little and often with clean, sanitised blades.
  • Photinia — responds strongly to pruning, which is precisely what drives that vivid red new growth.
  • Viburnum — needs thinning as well as shaping, or the interior hollows behind a green shell.
  • Pittosporum — cut back into green growth; it is reluctant to reshoot from bare wood.
Bringing a hedge back when it has grown past tidy

Neglected hedges are rarely beyond saving. We assess whether the species reshoots from old wood, then stage the work — often reducing across two seasons rather than one brutal cut, so you keep your screening while it recovers. Where a hedge is genuinely finished, we say so plainly, and can fold a replacement into wider garden makeovers.

What we do

Welcome to Greenz Gardenscaping

Established in 2014, Greenz has built a solid reputation for delivering professional and reliable service. With over 400 clients Sydney wide, Greenz specialises in commercial, strata and residential properties. Based in the Hills District, Greenz has teams servicing the Hills District, North Shore, Hornsby, CBD, Inner West, Parramatta and Ryde areas.

Whether it is a clean up to tame your out-of-control garden or regular maintenance to keep your lawn looking neat, you can depend on the Greenz Gardenscaping team of trained garden professionals to get the job done.

The right moment to prune a Sydney hedge

Most Sydney hedges look their best with two to four cuts a year. Light maintenance runs spring through autumn, while growth is active and recovery is quick. Structural and restorative pruning belongs to late winter and early spring, before the first flush.

What happens when we prune your hedge

We quote on site rather than over the phone: height, access and condition change the work.

  • A fixed, itemised quote before anything is cut
  • Sharp, sanitised tools matched to the species
  • Full green waste removal, so light reaches the regrowth
  • Qualified horticulturists, public liability insured
  • Straight advice on feeding, watering and the season ahead

Hedges on strata schemes and commercial grounds

Shared property carries different pressures: sightlines, safety, budgets and committees. We prune to an agreed schedule and report clearly, whether that sits within a strata garden maintenance contract or a broader commercial garden maintenance program. Ongoing hedge work also folds neatly into regular garden maintenance in Sydney.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

We engaged Greenz to do a major gardening clean up and general lawn service on the family home. We’re busy people and really just don’t have the time to maintain the yard, so the yard and gardens really were out of control.

The team were FANTASTIC. Just WOW.

The boys cleaned up the gardens and the yard (a huge undertaking), and the yard and gardens have not looked or felt better. From the initial consultation right through to the finishing touch ups, the attention to detail, personalised service and value for money are +++.

We will absolutely be using your services again.

Thank you, Greenz!

Before they came, my yard looked like it was sponsored by chaos. Adam and Ben and the rest of the team were instrumental in turning my garden from something that was so average to an amazing oasis. They were honest and open in all communication and gave professional and cohesive advice that catered to my original vision but it turned out so much more than I could have ever hoped for. If I could give more stars I would but alas only can do 5 so 5 it is! I’m pretty sure my plants are now living a better life than I am.

I have been using Greenz for over 10 years to maintain my gardens and have found them to be exemplary. They always show up when they say they will, and are affable, knowledgeable and committed to doing their job properly. Whichever team shows up they have always done an excellent job and satisfied any specific requests that I have had of them. The owner, Ben, comes to my home periodically to review the work that has been done and to discuss any additional work which I might want to undertake, which I appreciate greatly. I cannot recommend this business highly enough. Keep up the great work.

Hedge pruning questions, answered

What is the difference between hedge pruning and hedge trimming?

Trimming shears the outer surface to hold shape. Pruning cuts selectively into the plant — thinning, removing dead wood, opening the canopy — to improve health, density and structure. Most hedges need both.

How often should a hedge be pruned in Sydney?

Two to four cuts a year suits most Sydney hedges. Vigorous growers such as Lilly Pilly may want more; slow, formal hedges like Buxus prefer light, frequent attention.

When is the best time to prune hedges in Sydney?

Light maintenance pruning suits spring through autumn while growth is active. Structural or restorative pruning is best from late winter into early spring.

Can an overgrown hedge be saved?

Usually. It depends on whether the species reshoots from old wood. We often reduce across two seasons so it keeps screening you while it recovers.

Do you remove the clippings?

Yes. Full green waste removal is part of every job. Clearing debris off the hedge also lets light in, which drives dense regrowth.

How much does hedge pruning cost in Sydney?

We quote on site, because height, access, species and condition all change the job. You receive a fixed, itemised quote before we start, free and without obligation.

Which Sydney suburbs do you prune hedges in?

We work across roughly 200 suburbs, from the Hills District, Hornsby and the North Shore through to the Inner West, Parramatta, Ryde and the CBD.

Are your gardeners qualified and insured?

Yes. Our team are qualified horticulturists and we carry public liability insurance. Read more about the team and how we work.
