Hedge Trimming Sydney

Greenz Gardenscaping trims and shapes hedges across Sydney. Our qualified horticulturists cut for clean lines and healthy regrowth, clear away every clipping, and quote each job on site with fixed, itemised pricing.

What our hedge trimming service covers

Whether it is a crisp formal hedge out the front or a relaxed screen for privacy, we keep it neat, even and in proportion. Our hedge work covers maintenance trims to hold shape through the growing season; formative pruning on young hedges to build density from the base up; restorative pruning to bring a neglected hedge back; height reduction and reshaping; topiary and feature shaping; and full green waste removal.

Hedge work is included with our regular lawn and garden maintenance, so most clients keep their hedges on the same visit schedule as their mowing and weeding.

Hedges we trim in Sydney

Different hedging plants respond very differently to the same cut. These are the ones we work with most.

Lilly Pilly (Syzygium). Fast, dense, and the most planted screening hedge in Sydney. Watch for psyllid, a tiny sap-sucking insect that causes pimple-like bumps and distortion on new growth. Trimming affected growth out at the right time, combined with feeding, makes a real difference to how the hedge recovers.

Murraya. Vigorous and glossy with scented flowers. Needs regular trimming or it goes leggy and opens up at the base.

Buxus, or English box. Slow, formal, and the classic low border. Keep an eye out for box blight, a fungal problem that causes bare patches and leaf drop. Clean, sharp cuts and good airflow through the hedge reduce the risk.

Photinia. Grown for its red new growth, which only comes after a trim.

Viburnum and Pittosporum. Reliable screening hedges that hold a shape well.

Because our team are qualified horticulturists, we cut with each plant’s growth habit in mind rather than running a trimmer over everything at the same setting.

Trimming versus pruning, and what your hedge actually needs

These two get used interchangeably, but they are different jobs.

Trimming is about shape. A light cut across the outer growth to keep the hedge sharp, even and to size. Done through the growing season, it also thickens the hedge, because cutting the tips encourages branching further back.

Pruning is about structure and health. It goes deeper into the plant to take out dead, diseased or crossing branches, open up airflow, or cut a hedge back hard to rebuild it.

Most hedges need regular trimming and occasional pruning. If yours is bare and woody at the bottom, or has grown well past where you want it, trimming alone will not fix it. That is a pruning job.

What we do

Welcome to Greenz Gardenscaping

Established in 2014, Greenz has built a solid reputation for delivering professional and reliable service. With over 400 clients Sydney wide, Greenz specialises in commercial, strata and residential properties. Based in the Hills District, Greenz has teams servicing the Hills District, North Shore, Hornsby, CBD, Inner West, Parramatta and Ryde areas.

Whether it is a clean up to tame your out-of-control garden or regular maintenance to keep your lawn looking neat, you can depend on the Greenz Gardenscaping team of trained garden professionals to get the job done.

Tall and overgrown hedges

Overgrown and high hedges are where technique and the right equipment count most.

The key with any tall hedge is taper. The top should be kept slightly narrower than the base so light reaches the lower foliage. A hedge cut straight up and down, or wider at the top, slowly goes bare at the bottom and will not recover on its own.

Restoring a badly overgrown hedge is usually staged across more than one season rather than cut back hard all at once, which gives the plant time to push new growth before it loses more.

Some jobs are not gardening jobs. If a hedge has grown into power lines or has become a tree rather than a hedge, it needs a qualified arborist and, in some cases, council approval. We will tell you straight if that is the case rather than take the work on.

When to trim hedges in Sydney

Most Sydney hedges look their best with two to four trims a year. Fast growers like Lilly Pilly and Murraya sit at the higher end, while slow-growing formal hedges like Buxus sit at the lower end.

Spring to autumn. Light maintenance trims through the growing season keep growth dense and the shape sharp.

Late winter to early spring. The right window for harder structural work, before the main flush of new growth.

Avoid heavy cuts in extreme heat. A hard cut during a heatwave exposes inner foliage that has never seen direct sun, which can scorch.

Check for nesting birds in spring. Native birds and their nests are protected in NSW, so an active nest means leaving that section until the young have fledged.

What affects hedge trimming cost

We quote on-site rather than over the phone because photos rarely show access or how overgrown a hedge really is. What moves the price is height, since anything needing ladders or platforms is slower and more careful work; total length in metres; access, such as narrow side paths, steep ground or planted beds under the hedge; species and condition, since a neglected hedge needing restoration takes longer than a maintained one; and green waste volume.

You get a fixed, itemised quote before we start. Clients on a regular maintenance schedule generally pay less per visit than one-off overgrown jobs, simply because there is less growth to take off each time.

Strata and commercial hedge trimming

We trim hedges for strata complexes, offices, retail frontages and commercial grounds across Sydney, on a schedule and to a consistent standard every visit. We are fully insured for commercial work.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

We engaged Greenz to do a major gardening clean up and general lawn service on the family home. We’re busy people and really just don’t have the time to maintain the yard, so the yard and gardens really were out of control.

The team were FANTASTIC. Just WOW.

The boys cleaned up the gardens and the yard (a huge undertaking), and the yard and gardens have not looked or felt better. From the initial consultation right through to the finishing touch ups, the attention to detail, personalised service and value for money are +++.

We will absolutely be using your services again.

Thank you, Greenz!

Before they came, my yard looked like it was sponsored by chaos. Adam and Ben and the rest of the team were instrumental in turning my garden from something that was so average to an amazing oasis. They were honest and open in all communication and gave professional and cohesive advice that catered to my original vision but it turned out so much more than I could have ever hoped for. If I could give more stars I would but alas only can do 5 so 5 it is! I’m pretty sure my plants are now living a better life than I am.

I have been using Greenz for over 10 years to maintain my gardens and have found them to be exemplary. They always show up when they say they will, and are affable, knowledgeable and committed to doing their job properly. Whichever team shows up they have always done an excellent job and satisfied any specific requests that I have had of them. The owner, Ben, comes to my home periodically to review the work that has been done and to discuss any additional work which I might want to undertake, which I appreciate greatly. I cannot recommend this business highly enough. Keep up the great work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does hedge trimming cost in Australia?
Cost varies with hedge height, total length, access, species and how overgrown it is, so any single figure is misleading. Tall hedges needing ladders or platforms cost more than ground-level work. We quote on-site and give you a fixed, itemised price before we start.
When should you not trim a hedge?
Avoid hard cuts during extreme heat, when exposed inner foliage can scorch, and during heavy frost. In spring, check for nesting birds first, as native birds and their nests are protected in NSW. Also avoid cutting a stressed or drought-affected hedge until it recovers.
When should you trim hedges in Sydney?
Light maintenance trims work right through the growing season, spring to autumn. Save harder structural pruning for late winter or early spring, before the main flush of new growth. Fast growers like Lilly Pilly usually need three to four trims a year.
What is the best time of year to trim your hedges?
For shape and density, trim through the warmer months while the hedge is actively growing and will fill in quickly. For a hard cutback or a full restoration, late winter to early spring gives the plant a full season to recover.
Why is my hedge bare at the bottom?
Usually light. If a hedge is cut straight up, or wider at the top than the base, the lower foliage is shaded out and thins. Trimming with a taper, so the top is slightly narrower than the base, lets light reach the whole plant and thickens it back up.
How often should hedges be trimmed?
Most Sydney hedges need two to four trims a year. Fast growers like Lilly Pilly and Murraya sit at the higher end, while slow-growing formal hedges like Buxus sit at the lower end. We will recommend a schedule based on your plants and how sharp you like them kept.
