Garden Maintenance Kirribilli

Garden Maintenance Kirribilli

Kirribilli packs heritage apartments and terraces onto a small harbour peninsula, so most of its gardening happens in containers.

Garden Maintenance for Kirribilli’s Small Spaces

Kirribilli garden maintenance is small-space work at high density: tiny courtyards behind terraces, balcony and rooftop containers, and heritage apartment entry gardens on a peninsula with almost no open ground. Monthly to fortnightly.

Kirribilli occupies a compact peninsula directly under the Harbour Bridge, with a density closer to inner Sydney than to the rest of the North Shore.

Open ground is genuinely scarce. Most properties have a small courtyard, a balcony, or a share of a heritage building’s entry garden, and little else.

That pushes almost all the planting into containers, which is a different discipline from gardening – fixed media volume, no ground beneath, and exposure that varies enormously with which way a balcony faces.

Containers Are Not Small Gardens

A container has a fixed volume of media and no ground beneath it, so it runs out of nutrient on a schedule and dries far faster than any in-ground bed, regardless of watering.

Pot size is the most common cause of failure here. A container too small for its planting cannot hold enough moisture to survive a hot week, however often it is topped up.

Aspect does the rest. A north-facing balcony and a south-facing courtyard metres apart need completely different species, and swapping them guarantees failure.

All Commercial Residential Strata

Heritage Frontages and Carrying Routes

Many buildings here are heritage-listed with small formal entry gardens, and those gardens carry the whole street presentation of the building.

Everything cut comes out through a building or down a stair, and kerbside collection across the North Sydney Council area runs on its own cycle, so removal on the day is built into the service.

Wind off the harbour is funnelled between buildings here, which dries exposed containers quickly and shreds soft foliage.

Balconies, Courtyards and Heritage Entry Gardens

Balcony and rooftop containers need feeding and media assessment rather than pruning-led care, generally fortnightly through summer.

Paved courtyards run monthly, covering weeding, container care, paving and drains.

Heritage building entry gardens need a documented common-area cycle with reporting.

New planting, paving and courtyard construction are landscaping rather than maintenance.

Why Kirribilli Planting Needs Horticultural Input

Containers in a windy, high-density setting are among the hardest growing positions in Sydney, and they fail for reasons that look like neglect but are not.

Greenz Gardenscaping has operated since 2014 with qualified horticulturists, so a container failing from root space or aspect gets identified rather than replanted with the same thing.

Full green waste removal is included, we are public liability insured, and quotes are written after seeing the space with access confirmed up front.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND. We engaged Greenz to do a major gardening clean up and general lawn service on the family home. We're busy people and really just don't have the time to maintain the yard, so the yard and gardens really were out of control. The team were FANTASTIC. Just WOW. The boys cleaned up the gardens and the yard (a huge undertaking), and the yard and gardens have not looked or felt better. From the initial consultation right through to the finishing touch ups, the attention to detail, personalised service and value for money are +++. We will absolutely be using your services again. Thank you, Greenz!

Before they came, my yard looked like it was sponsored by chaos. Adam and Ben and the rest of the team were instrumental in turning my garden from something that was so average to an amazing oasis. They were honest and open in all communication and gave professional and cohesive advice that catered to my original vision but it turned out so much more than I could have ever hoped for. If I could give more stars I would but alas only can do 5 so 5 it is! I’m pretty sure my plants are now living a better life than I am.

I have been using Greenz for over 10 years to maintain my gardens and have found them to be exemplary. They always show up when they say they will, and are affable, knowledgeable and committed to doing their job properly. Whichever team shows up they have always done an excellent job and satisfied any specific requests that I have had of them. The owner, Ben, comes to my home periodically to review the work that has been done and to discuss any additional work which I might want to undertake, which I appreciate greatly. I cannot recommend this business highly enough. Keep up the great work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions Before You Call

What Kirribilli residents, owners and building managers ask most often.

My balcony pots die every summer no matter how much I water. Why?

Almost always container size and media. A pot too small for its planting cannot hold enough moisture through a hot week, however often it is topped up.

Can you maintain a balcony or rooftop?

Yes. It is container work rather than gardening - feeding, media and pot size matter far more than pruning at that height.

Why does my neighbour's balcony thrive and mine fail?

Usually aspect. North and south-facing positions metres apart need completely different species, and the same planting will not work on both.

How often does a Kirribilli property need servicing?

Monthly for a paved courtyard, fortnightly through summer for balconies and containers where drying is fast.

Do you maintain heritage building entry gardens?

Yes, on documented common-area programs with reporting after each visit.

Do you take the waste away?

Yes, every visit, including what has to be carried out through a building or down a stair.

Does the wind here really make a difference?

Yes. It is funnelled between buildings, which dries exposed containers quickly and shreds soft foliage, so tougher species do better.

What is landscaping rather than maintenance?

New planting, paving and courtyard construction. Maintenance keeps what is there alive and in shape.
