Irrigation Installation Sydney

Greenz Gardenscaping designs and installs water-efficient irrigation across Sydney. Our qualified horticulturists build watering systems around your soil, your plants and your site, and every job starts with a free on-site quote and fixed, itemised pricing.

What irrigation installation involves

Installing irrigation is not just laying pipe. It starts with understanding how water actually moves through your garden.

A proper installation means checking water pressure and flow rate at the tap, which decides how many sprinklers or drippers one zone can run; mapping watering zones so areas with similar needs are grouped together, because a shaded fernery and a sun-baked front lawn should never run off the same valve; choosing the right delivery method for each area, drip for beds and pop-ups for lawn; trenching and laying line, fitting solenoid valves and connecting a controller; then testing every zone, setting run times and showing you how to adjust it.

Get the zoning wrong, and you will overwater half the garden while the rest stays dry. It is the most common fault we find when we are called out for irrigation repairs.

Types of irrigation systems we install

Most Sydney gardens need a combination rather than one system.

Drip and micro-spray. Delivers water slowly at root level through a drip line. Best for garden beds, hedges, pots and screening plants, and very little is lost to evaporation or wind.

Pop-up sprinklers. Sit flush with the lawn and rise only when running. Best for open lawn, and the usual choice alongside new turf or turf management work.

Micro-spray and fixed risers. For dense planting and shrubs where drip alone will not give even coverage.

Smart and Wi-Fi controllers. Adjust watering by season and let you pause the system from your phone when rain is forecast.

If you are already planning a garden makeover, installing irrigation before the planting and mulch go in is far cheaper than retrofitting later.

Our installation process

On-site assessment. We walk the garden with you, check pressure and flow, and talk through how you want it watered.

Design. We map zones, line runs and the right heads or drippers for each area.

Fixed, itemised quote. You see exactly what is included before anything starts.

Installation. We fit everything cleanly, with minimal disruption to your lawn and beds.

Testing and handover. We run every zone, fine-tune the controller and show you how it all works.

Based in the Hills District, Greenz has teams servicing the Hills District, North Shore, Hornsby, CBD, Inner West, Parramatta and Ryde areas.

What affects the cost of irrigation installation in Sydney

We quote every job on site rather than off a price list, because two gardens of the same size can differ a lot in cost.

Garden size and number of zones. More zones mean more valves, more wire and more line.

Drip versus pop-up. Lawn sprinkler systems need more trenching than bed drip lines.

Controller type. A basic timer costs less than a smart Wi-Fi controller.

Site access. Narrow side gates, established paving and mature roots all slow trenching down.

Retrofit versus new build. Installing into an established planted garden takes more care than an open site.

Existing infrastructure. Sometimes an old system can be partly reused rather than replaced.

You will have a fixed, itemised quote before we start, so there are no surprises along the way.

DIY versus professional installation

You can install a basic system yourself, and for a single garden bed on a tap timer that is often perfectly fine.

Where DIY tends to fall down is on the parts you cannot see. Sizing a zone beyond what your water pressure can supply is the most common mistake, and every sprinkler on that zone then runs weakly so the spray patterns never overlap properly. Fittings that are not glued or clamped correctly can leak underground for months before you notice it on the bill. And any connection to mains supply needs to be done properly, including backflow prevention so garden water cannot siphon back into drinking water.

If you want a system that waters evenly, lasts, and is safe to connect, it is worth having it designed and installed properly.

Watering rules and water efficiency in Sydney

Sydney swings between long dry stretches and sudden downpours, and water restrictions can change from one year to the next. A well-designed system is the easiest way to stay both compliant and water-efficient.

Water early. Watering in the early morning loses far less to evaporation than watering in the middle of the day.

Water deeply, less often. Short daily bursts encourage shallow roots. Longer, less frequent cycles push roots down and build drought tolerance.

Match run times to your soil. Sydney clay soils absorb water slowly and do better with shorter cycles and a soak between them. Sandy soils drain fast and need lighter, more frequent watering.

Mulch the beds. Mulch over the drip line holds moisture in and cuts how long each zone needs to run.

Check current restrictions with Sydney Water before setting your controller, as the rules can change seasonally.

Areas we service

We install irrigation across roughly 200 Sydney suburbs, from the Hills District, Hornsby and the North Shore through to the Inner West, Parramatta, Ryde and the CBD. We are based in Castle Hill.

Irrigation is one part of what we do. We also handle lawn maintenance, lawn rejuvenation, garden irrigation servicing, strata garden maintenance and commercial garden maintenance, so we can look after your system long after it goes in.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

We engaged Greenz to do a major gardening clean up and general lawn service on the family home. We’re busy people and really just don’t have the time to maintain the yard, so the yard and gardens really were out of control.

The team were FANTASTIC. Just WOW.

The boys cleaned up the gardens and the yard (a huge undertaking), and the yard and gardens have not looked or felt better. From the initial consultation right through to the finishing touch ups, the attention to detail, personalised service and value for money are +++.

We will absolutely be using your services again.

Thank you, Greenz!

Before they came, my yard looked like it was sponsored by chaos. Adam and Ben and the rest of the team were instrumental in turning my garden from something that was so average to an amazing oasis. They were honest and open in all communication and gave professional and cohesive advice that catered to my original vision but it turned out so much more than I could have ever hoped for. If I could give more stars I would but alas only can do 5 so 5 it is! I’m pretty sure my plants are now living a better life than I am.

I have been using Greenz for over 10 years to maintain my gardens and have found them to be exemplary. They always show up when they say they will, and are affable, knowledgeable and committed to doing their job properly. Whichever team shows up they have always done an excellent job and satisfied any specific requests that I have had of them. The owner, Ben, comes to my home periodically to review the work that has been done and to discuss any additional work which I might want to undertake, which I appreciate greatly. I cannot recommend this business highly enough. Keep up the great work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to put in an irrigation system?
Cost depends on your garden size, how many zones are needed, whether you want drip or pop-up sprinklers, the controller you choose, and how easy the site is to trench. We quote on site and give you a fixed, itemised price before any work starts.
Can I install an irrigation system myself?
You can install a simple drip system on a tap timer yourself. Larger systems are harder than they look. Zones must be sized for your water pressure, fittings must be sealed correctly, and any mains connection must have backflow prevention. Poor zoning is the most common DIY fault.
What are the main types of irrigation systems?
For home gardens, there are four common types: drip irrigation for beds and hedges, micro-spray for dense planting, pop-up sprinklers for lawns, and fixed risers for shrubs and taller plants. Most Sydney gardens use a combination of these, split into separate watering zones.
How long does an irrigation installation take?
Most residential installations are completed in 1 to 2 days, depending on the number of zones, the amount of trenching required, and site access. We confirm the timeframe in your quote. Larger and commercial sites are scheduled around your access requirements.
When is the best time to install irrigation?
Any time of year works, but installing before summer means the system is running when your garden needs it most. If you are re-landscaping or laying new turf, install irrigation before planting and mulching, as retrofitting later is more expensive and disturbs the garden.
Do you repair existing irrigation systems?
Yes. If your system is leaking, watering unevenly, or the controller has stopped working, we handle irrigation repairs, system audits, and new installations. In many cases, an existing system can be repaired or partly reused rather than fully replaced.
